Madurai - A Unique Chakrathazhwar @ Thirumogur

Distance from Madurai: 15 km

Temple Timings: 7 am - 12 noon and 4 pm - 8 pm

This is one of the 108 Divya Deshams.

Kaalamega Perumal, the presiding deity is in the standing posture along with Sridevi and Bhoomadevi. The Utsavar is Thirumogur Aaptan Vazhitunai Perumal. Vazithunai Perumal is the god who guards the  soul when it is departed from the physical body and travel to Vaikundam.

We reached temple just around 8 pm, closing time for the temple. To our surprise there were no devotees inside. The priest welcomed us with a big smile. We enquired about the Sthala Puranam (Sthala-Place, Puranam-tales of ancient times). Priest had lot of time to explain us. As per the priest "the Lord took Mohini (enchanting woman) form here. As the Lord himself took the avataar here, Thayar got annoyed and said that she doesn't want to be involved in the festival. So all festivals like adipuram, Panguni Uttiram, Poo Pallakku (Flower  palanquin) and Panguni Uttiram Theppam are done for Andal only.

The notable Chakkarathazhwar (Chakkarathalwar) is seen with 16 hands holding different weapons at the front end and Narasimha at the back. At his divine leg lies a Bhoo (earth) and Varaha Perumal who saved the earth. At the top lies the Hiranya Narasimhan, Prahaladan and Lakshmi Narayanan.
